Fuhr 856 Type 4 Multipoint Door Lock – 4 Hooks, Latch & Deadbolt, Lift Lever Operation
Fuhr 856 Type 4 Multipoint Door Lock – 4 Hooks, Latch & Deadbolt, Lift Lever Operation
The Fuhr 856 Lift Lever Multipoint Door Lock is a high-security locking system featuring 4 hooks, 1 deadbolt, and 1 latch. This configuration is ideal for securing uPVC, timber, aluminium, and composite doors.
This version includes 4 sturdy hook bolts and is most commonly used on uPVC doors, although it’s equally compatible with doors made from other materials. It uses a lift lever mechanism, meaning the handle must be lifted to engage the locking points—also referred to by Fuhr as a lever-operated system.
All Fuhr 856 series multipoint door locks are based on the same core design. Differences between versions typically involve the placement of hooks, rollers, or other locking points.
Identifying Fuhr 856 Multipoint Locks
Fuhr gearboxes have a distinctive design, making identification easier once removed from the door. A unique triangular shape near the top screw on the faceplate helps confirm the model. Most Fuhr locks also have the brand name stamped on the faceplate. Models 856 (lift lever), 859 (split spindle), and 855 (keywind) share similarities but differ in how they operate.
Gearbox Specifications
- Gearbox size: 220mm height x 18mm width
- Deadbolt throw: 20mm (or 14mm on 25mm and 30mm backsets)
- Latch and deadbolt height: 31mm each
- Distance between latch and deadbolt: 61mm
- Screw fixing distances: 91mm (top to middle), 108mm (middle to bottom)
Pre-Fitted Components
All Fuhr replacement gearboxes from Duffells come with a spring and ball bearing pre-fitted. These components provide a more responsive feel when locking or unlocking. Many third-party gearboxes do not include these parts.
Latch Compatibility
Older Fuhr gearboxes used a 28mm latch, whereas newer ones use a 33mm latch. If the old latch is undamaged, it can be transferred to the new gearbox using the Allen bolt securing it in place.
Special Considerations
Some bifold doors—particularly those made by Smarts Aluminium—use 30mm backset gearboxes that are not interchangeable with standard Fuhr 856 gearboxes.
Hook Locking Details
The hooks on this lock throw 20mm and are contained in a 135.5mm x 40mm x 15mm case. Fuhr hooks typically throw upwards rather than in both directions.
Operation: Lift Lever
To lock the door:
- Lift the handle to engage hooks and deadbolts.
- Turn the key to secure the lock.
To unlock the door:
- Turn the key to release the hooks and deadbolt.
- Push the handle down to retract the latch.
Latch Reversal Instructions
To reverse the latch, remove the screw beside it on the lock case, take the latch out, flip it, reinsert it, and resecure the screw.
Compatibility
This lock is commonly used on uPVC doors but is fully compatible with aluminium, timber, and composite doors as well. Accessories such as keeps, spindles, handles, and replacement parts are also available.
